Chapter 16

The Brutal Banker

In the demon universe there were worlds whose evolution was based upon religious practice and worlds bound to a system of only empirical belief. The Martyc realm was void of religion, not from dislike or disbelief, but because they didn’t look towards any gods for meaning. Pragmatic beings they preferred the evidence of concrete reality and in their pursuit for profit they were less of the view that greed was good than greed was inevitable. In their chase for profit the more intelligent of the demons was also the one least concerned with philosophical review of their own existence. The Martycs built an Empire upon the blood of those that would stand in their way, so when force proved to interfere with profit they used what they knew and what they knew was the inevitability of greed.

The entire focus of the Martyc Empire was upon efficiency of result, although a proud race, the expectation of emotional control was greater than cultural vanity. The Empire would defer arrogance for outcome and this resulted in strange associations such as a cooperative liaison with the Vampire Nation. The divorce of emotion from business proved to be the greatest asset of the Martycs and they soon realised that, with financial control, the one who could feed their army compared to one who owned a larger army would invariably win out. Once in possession of this knowledge they spread out across the Reveal obtaining assets in many worlds until they were the majority and their decision was the only one that mattered.

Some worlds attempted to use violence to oust the Martycs who were strangling their economies with off world ownership. They discovered much to their dismay that the warrior of legend could shed the skin of urbane demon of spreadsheets with frightening ease. The Empire was not concerned with cultural details of the worlds they occupied and though above mindless destruction—if there were a point to be made—then it would occur. In order to operate beyond the scope of attention of the man on the street the Empire found inconspicuous ways to assert their power. Famines, wars between local factions, disease outbreaks, whatever it took to bring a world to its knees would be used to return the balance of power in favour of the Empire.

Martycs didn’t see themselves as cruel beings even though they divorced themselves from empathy and viewed only the practicality behind the action. If a world protested against their financial presence, then a reminder of the reality of their situation, a reality known well throughout the Reveal would be reinforced. The Varkja were used for several purposes, their arrival spoke of the potential brute force that could be called upon, their training in security made them useful in removing insurgents, and finally they were the bodyguards of princes—the royal force of the Empire. In exchange for service to the Empire the Varkja world was left alone, because the Martycs would have to get their hands dirty and bloody for an extremely long time in order to overcome Varkja resistance.
